Rev. Dr. LaVerne Whitehead Reed trailblazer; February 1992 first and only female in that 25 year old congregation, ordained to the Gospel Ministry at Harvey Avenue Baptist Church, Fort Worth, Texas. October 1992, first African American female Minister to deliver the Invocation for the Fort Worth City Council; 1992- 1993 first African American student to serve as Secretary of the Brite Divinity School TCU student Government. October 1994 in an unprecedented move, Bishop John R. Bryant admitted her to the North Texas Annual Conference and ordained her an Itinerant Elder at that same Conference; Another first for this Minister and the North Texas Annual Conference. Dr. Reed’s pastoral appointments include Dean of Richard Allen Chapel, Paul Quinn College Dallas, Texas, the oldest historically Black College west of the Mississippi, and Senior Pastor of St. James A.M.E. Church, Denton, Texas, the oldest African American congregation in Denton County.
